Nets, Nets and More Nets

These nets are my favorite thing at the moment. I am now finally enjoying myself in college and getting excited to go in every morning.
I started of with looking at fishing and making nets then ended up using this wonderful copper/blue voile material. I am now looking at the shape of them. Tomorrow i am getting the nets and wrapping them around peoples bodies. I also want to study how the light shines off the fabric.

Project

My project had now developed into the death at the sea. I live on the coast so there's a lot of disasters that happened near me. A few of my relations were also killed in them. I will be talking about them in a different post.

I went down to a island close to me called Cruit Island. (Of the west of donegal) I went down wanting to make a body out of seaweed. I started off by making a body that looked like it was lying  in a coffin. I choose seaweed as it is very easy to get tangled in and if you get washed up on the shore it is likely you will be cover in seaweed.
I really like this photo. I don't know why but it makes me feel quite disturb.

I placed the body here because the tied was just after going out so it makes it look it was only lying there for a hour or so.

Me making the body!
Surpriseingly it took ages to make this!!

The crawling body

I love this one because its crawling to the shore for help. I wanted the body to be more 'real' looking but I like the way this turned out because you have to look at it for a bit longer to see what it really is and really doing.
The body!

Fishermen, the Donegal coast and creatures

So I am finally starting my summer project! I have had the busiest summer yet, I represented donegal in the mary from dungloe international festival and the amount of work put in for that was unreal. I also work full time in the summer as a prep chef in the lobster pot in burtonport. So really I have no time at all to do this project but I'm trying to fit it in before I head to work.

Anyway my project is going to be about the coast of donegal and what the fishermen went trough when fishing was booming in donegal.

I done a lot of research all ready about fishermen and the coast but I'm also looking at the sea creatures. I started collecting the shells from work and looking at the fish and shellfish in detail. I never released how much detail could be in one prawn or the patterns there in on oyster shells. I have gotten so interested in this I just wish I had more time to do it!

I hope to make something with the pattern in this oyster!!

These mussel shells remind me of butterfly's I NEED to do something with them it would be a shame not to.

Busy Busy Summer!!

Sorry i haven't blog in a while but i am the most busiest person ever this summer! I am working 6 days a week and I'm just back from Santa Ponsa. Best holiday of my life. I also got picked to be the Donegal Mary for the Mary from Dungloe. So that's another week taken up. I'm starting to worry now about my summer project :/

My Summer project can basically be anything and im doing my about the beach/westcoast of Donegal because i love it and live there. I also work in The Lobster Pot a seafood restaurant in Burtonport and i'm collecting a load of shells and lobsters from there so i can work with them.

I am hopefully going down the beach in a minute if Dad is about because its a horrible day so i might be able to find some interesting things.

Cone Mask

This is the 3rd mask and final mask i made. It is made out of card and has a strap on the back to attach to the head.
It covers the issues protection and concealment.
I love the way these photos turned out and i love the first picture.

Pin Mask.

I loved the way this mask has turned out, simple and plain. This was a dust mask but i wanted to improve the protecting so i did by at pins to it. I just done a line down the centre as i wanted to keep it simple yet effective.

Face Helmet

This is a FACE HELMET!  This is a sculpture that fixs to the body. It protects the face and supports the head. It is made from cardboard. I painted it white but it was very plain looking so i got black paint and put some on. It looks alot better. I also made the chin piece with a cushion on it for comfort.

Masks. Sculptures that fix to the body.

This is one of the masks I'm in the middle of working with. Once i get someone to take photos of me in it I'll have them up. It'll be later on tonight though.
This piece invades your personal space as you have limited movement. The 3 strings attached will be stuck to the wall.

A woolen face.

This is one of the ugliest things i made during first year. It is my face with wool tighten around it.
i was very uncomfortable with it around my face as it was between my eye lids.

I like the second image better as you can see a lot more of the tangles.

The Spider Web- Sculptures to fix to the body

For our last project i have made a spiders web. I am showing how thw spiders web protects the human body but the human body also invades the spiders web.

I used the forest as it makes the image more exciting and you also can find a lot of spiders webs in there. I also dressed my sister in black to make her stand out from the web and the forest. I used black instead of a bright colour as i thought it was more dramatic looking.

Bronze Pennies

I made this 'beads' becuase bronze was used in the iron age. There are 20 pennies in them because there are 20 beads on the necklace. I started with one penny and circled the pennies around them but they didnt turn out circle. But i love the way they turned out. I done two becuase people in the iron age mostly wore 2 or 3 beads in a necklace.
